Hinman Dental Society

If you work in a dental practice or sell to one, the Hinman Dental Society is the organiser behind one of the best-known dental meetings in the US. It runs the Hinman Dental Meeting every March at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, combining continuing education for the whole dental team with an exhibit hall of dental companies. The society is a non-profit organisation of more than 800 member dentists, mainly in metropolitan Atlanta, and it was founded in 1911 by Dr Thomas P. Hinman.

What you get from the meeting

The society says the meeting is attended each year by more than 12,000 dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and dental office staff, from Georgia, the south-eastern US and further afield. Because it is aimed at the entire practice team, you can bring specialists, front office staff, laboratory technicians and students to the same event. The programme mixes peer-reviewed lectures, hands-on technical courses and a trade show of the latest dental technology with live demonstrations.

Society members work at the meeting as part of their membership, which the society says is what gives Hinman its reputation for hospitality. Booth space is assigned by priority points, so exhibiting in consecutive years improves your position on the floor.

Where the money goes

Any surplus from the meeting is invested and then given as scholarships to people and institutions that support dental education. The society says it has given more than $12 million in total. Its other aims are high standards of dental practice and public advocacy and outreach for dentistry.

A long history in Atlanta

The first meeting, then called the Atlanta Midwinter Clinic, was held in 1912 and was limited to 40 dentists, each expected to report back to their state society. Exhibits were added in 1942 with 14 booths. The meeting outgrew hotels including the Piedmont, the Ansley and the Biltmore, moved to the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium in 1944, later used the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hilton, then the Atlanta Market Center, and moved to the Georgia World Congress Center in the late 1990s. The society’s motto, from Dr Hinman, is “Devotion to detail is the secret of success”.

The Hinman executive office is at 33 Lenox Pointe NE in Atlanta and is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The society publishes separate phone lines for registration, hotels and exhibits on its website.
